For a basic understanding of book copyrights go to the source.

Copyright protection no longer requires that the copyright holder and year of copyright are displayed in the book, but it’s advisable to include such notice. You can set this in type before your book is coyrighted. Once your book is manufactured you must submit the completed paperwork, the copyright fee (currently $45.00), and a sample of your book to be placed in the Library of Congress.

Copyright protection extends 70 years past the death of the author and a US copyright is recognized by all signatories of the Berne Convention as listed here.
